The art of tea, or chanoyu, developed in the urban areas of 16th-century Japan. The tearoom in
which it is practiced came to be known as a "mountain dwelling within the
city."
Today, located in a quiet pavilion off the busy path of the Colonnade
that distinguishes the front campus of Washington and Lee University, the
Reeves Center Japanese Tearoom is just such a retreat. This simple but
beautifully architected space offers a momentary escape from the intensity
of college life, and a means of sharing that moment with others.
